Why is prenatal massage important?
Research shows prenatal massage therapy can help reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health.
How often should you get a prenatal massage?
For prenatal massage, it is recommended that your appointments coincide with your doctor visits. This means once a month until 27 weeks, and twice a month until 36 weeks. After that, it is recommended that you transition to weekly appointments until you give birth.
When is the best time to get a prenatal massage?
Usually, we will advise moms to start massage after week 16 (i.e. the second trimester). This is because pregnancy, after week 16, is more stable compared to the first trimester.
Is prenatal massage good for baby?
Massage therapy helps provide regular blood flow to the uterus, placenta and fetus, promotes the delivery of oxygen and nutrients, and accelerates the removal of waste products, improving both mother’s and baby’s tissue health.
Do you lay on your stomach during a prenatal massage?
As long as you are comfortable, laying on your stomach during a massage will not hurt your baby.
What if I accidentally sleep on my back while pregnant?
You may want to get used to a new sleep position now, since you shouldn’t sleep on your back after 20 weeks of pregnancy. When you lie belly-up, the weight of your uterus can compress a major blood vessel, called the vena cava. This disrupts blood flow to your baby and leaves you nauseated, dizzy, and short of breath.
What can I expect from a prenatal massage?
In a traditional massage, you might spend half the time lying face-down on your stomach (which is not possible with a baby belly) and half the time facing up (a position that puts pressure on a major blood vessel that can disrupt blood flow to your baby and leave you feeling nauseous).
What do I wear to a prenatal massage?
Pregnancy massage can be performed with as much or as little clothing as you’re comfortable wearing – it’s always a personal decision. Usually we recommend that you keep underwear on, and we use towels for coverage so only the parts that are being massaged are exposed.
When is it too late for prenatal massage?
It’s not too late! You can safely get the massage after 28 weeks of pregnancy and the latest by 2 weeks before your EDD. If you need it earlier within week 16 until week 27 of pregnancy, make sure to get the green light from your obstetrician or gynaecologist first.
